Let us draw a check list for this blessed month of Ramadan in shaa Allah

Bismillah Ar Rahman Ar Rahiim

RA = rahmat of Allah

MA = Ma’arfirat of Allah

DAN – Dwiman protection from hellfire from Allah

1. As the moon of Ramadan is sighted, please prepare yourself in cleanliness by taking a ghusl with the intention of getting rid of your previous sins [tawbah]. Do two rakaats of nafil with the intention of tawbah. reaffirm your shahadah

2. Intend to fast every day with Iman and pure intention seeking the reward from Allah alone. The Prophet peace be upon him said, “Whoever fasts in Ramadan with Iman and seeking reward (from Allah) his past sins will be forgiven”. (Bukhari)

3. Make the intention of reading the whole Qur’an at least once during this blessed month in Arabic language.

4. Apart from the above mentioned, try to read the Qur’an in the language that you understand.

5. meditate as much as you can on the passages of the Quran and try to practise them

6. Have Suhoor [eating before fasting ]as the Prophet peace be upon him said, “Have Suhoor because it is blessed” and do not charge your stomach.

7. Make Du’a during the fast because the Prophet [peace be upon him] said that the supplication of the fasting person is not rejected . Ask for the good of this life and the next for yourself, your family and Muslims in general, especially those who are suffering unjustly. Also pray for our dead brothers and sisters in faith.

8. Make Dua before opening the fast. The Prophet [peace be upon him] said, “The fasting person has a supplication that is answered when he opens his fast”.

9. Give Sadaqah as often as you can, if not everyday. The Prophet [peace be upon him] was the most generous of people and he was most generous in Ramadan.

10. Provide food to the people and visit the poor, the needy, the old age, the orphans….

11. Avoid anything that diminishes the fast such as, lying, backbiting, cheating, getting angry. The Prophet peace be upon him said “Whoever does not give up false statements (i.e. telling lies), and evil deeds, and speaking bad words to others, Allah is not in need of his (fasting) leaving his food and drink.” [Bukhari]

12. Do not cook excess of food and do not think of Ramadan as a festival or any celebration. Ramadan is the month of the Quran and its objective is Taqwa of Allah.

13. Do not overload your stomach  after Iftar as if you are doing a festival of food. this practice is not loved by our beloved prophet.

14. Ask for forgiveness since this is the month Allah frees people from the fire. Allahumma innaka ‘afurun kareemun tuhibu ‘afwa, fafu ‘anni

15. Pray At-Tarawih with concentration . do not overburden yourself if you cannot do it. Tarawif is not an obligation and therefore should not be a burden upon those who cannot stand with concentration. Rather, do as much as you can and the best time for prayer [after the fard and the sunnah] is certainly tahajjud. So, sleep early and stand up in prayer at tahajjud and ask Allah and He will surely release you from all your burdens in life.   The Prophet peace be upon him said, “Whoever prays during Ramadan with Iman and seeking reward (from Allah) his past sins will be forgiven”.

16.  Invite others for Iftar. The Prophet [peace be upon him] said, “Whoever gives Iftar to someone fasting he will have the same reward without decreasing the reward of the person fasting”. Or else, buy dates and offer it with the intention of iftar.

17. Try harder the last ten nights especially the odd nights. The prophet would strive in Ramadan more than he would in any other month and more so in the last ten days.

18. For those who want to do Ihtikhaf during the last ten days, please do so in order to quit this ongoing process of the dunya and try to connect yourself in peace and tranquility to the Almighty Allah

19. Say this Dua a lot more on the night of Laitat-ul-Qadr : which i mentioned above (O Allah you are Forgiving and love forgiveness so forgive me).

20. Ask Allah to accept your swiyam.

“O you who believe, fasting is decreed for you, as it was decreed for those before you, that you may attain salvation. (Quran, 2:183)
