Fruits from Mauritius – a real pleasure to discover and taste

Mauritius is a tropical island where the weather is mostly hot. If you  travel to Mauritius, especially during November to February, the best thing to do is to eat watermelon!!!

Mangoes are very sweet. You can have a variety of mangoes in Mauritius. The best season for mangoes are November to January.

Papayas are good for digestion.

Bilimbi rond. there are two types of bilimbi: one is round and yellow [see photo below] and the other is long and green. Bilimbi are quite bitter. The best thing to do is to prepare some pickles which you can eat with rice and curry. Or, we may decide to prepare some candy and dry them. Normally the bilimbi will turn garnet [colour] due to the high level of cooked sugar.

La letchis [French word] – English word ‘Lychis’ – very tasty, my favourite!!!!

Jujube

This is called jamblons. It is best with some salt and chilli powder. The grains are good for diabetics.

 

Bananas are daily food for the Mauritian. Many families like to have them for breakfast.

La longane [french word] – Longan in English is a seasonal fruit

 

Avocado

Pineapple is good for the diet. Mauritian people like to buy pineapples in halves with salt and chillies[not recommended for the health]. It is also eaten in salad with mangoes and cucumber.
