A very important issue : is cigarette makruh or haraam?

This topic has been debated over years: is cigarette makruh or haraam? we see thousands of muslims given to smoking, even in islamic countries!!! Subhan Allah and also by people who are supposed to form youngsters in their islamic education. Today, our young brother, Tajoo, from Mauritius and my student in Islamic classes, will give us evidence from the Qur’an that smoking is not allowed. – Sister Ammaara

Let us read brother Tajoo’s article:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

All praises belong to Allah, the one who created us and all what is found in the heavens and the earths. May peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, his family and companions.

Is smoking Haraam (forbidden) or Makrooh(dislike)?

This is a very important topic as many people, still believe that smoking is Makrooh and not Haraam.

Allah says in Surah 5(Al-Maaida) verse 3:

 الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِي وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الْإِسْلَامَ دِينًا ۚ

[This day have I perfected your religion for you completed my favor upon you and have chosen for you Islam as your religion]

So this verse shows to us that Islam is a religion which Allah has perfected. All rules and regulations have been mentioned, directly or indirectly, in the Qur’an or taught by the prophet (SAW).

Smoking is something not mentioned in the Quran or Hadith as it was discovered later. Nevertheless in the Qur’an, as well as the Hadith, we learn that smoking is Haraam.

Some verses that prove smoking is Haraam:

Allah says in Surah 2(Al-Baqarah) Verse 195:

وَأَنْفِقُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَلَا تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ

[And spend of your substance in the cause of Allah and make not your own hands contribute to your destruction but do good]

This verse is ordering us to spend for the cause of Allah and not to destroy ourselves with our own hands.

Can anyone say that by buying cigarettes, are we spending for the cause of Allah? Aren’t we destroying ourselves with our own hands? So this verse clearly proves that smoking is Haraam as we are against the commands of Allah.

Further, Allah says in Surah 4(An-Nisa) Verse 29:

وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ

[nor kill (or destroy) yourselves]

In this verse we are told not to kill or destroy ourselves. Aren’t we killing ourselves by smoking? Is smoking a cure for diseases? We all know that Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 different chemicals, at least 50 are known to be carcinogens (cause cancer in humans) and many are poisonous. Cigarettes are one of few products which can be sold legally which can harm and even kill you over time if used as intended. So this verse clearly proves that smoking is Haraam as those who smoke are destroying themselves while Allah ordered us not to kill or destroy ourselves.

Allah says in Surah 17(Al-Israh) Verse 27:

إِنَّ الْمُبَذِّرِينَ كَانُوا إِخْوَانَ الشَّيَاطِينِ

[Verily spendthrifts are brothers of the Evil Ones]

In this verse we are informed that those who are wasteful are brothers of Shaitaan. All Muslims, even children, know that the accursed shaitaan is our avowed enemy. By buying cigarettes, we are proving ourselves to be brothers of the one who has been cursed by Allah, Subhan Allah, the one whose final destination is Jahannam. If we are smoking we are giving Shaitaan most importance than Allah and this is a great sin without any doubt. Hence, this verse also clearly shows that smoking is Haraam.

For Muslims who still consider cigarettes to be Halaal,

Why don’t you say “Bismillah” before smoking it?

And “Alhamdulillah” after smoking it?

If you see it as something with so much fun,

why don’t you teach your kids to smoke?

If you consider it to be a mercy from Allah (Astaghfirullah),

Why do you turn it off with your shoes?

(For youngsters) If you consider cigarettes to be something normal,

Why don’t you smoke in front of your parents?

We, Muslims, we have full conviction that the Qur’an is the word of God and its contents are true. No one will be able to change even one letter from the Qur’an as Allah Himself says in Surah 15 Verse 9.

So why aren’t we obeying the word of Allah? Are we aware that we shall taste death one day and return to Allah? Are we prepared for that difficult day when Allah will be very angry?

So please, stop smoking as it is destroying your health which instead, you should have thanked Allah for. It’s not impossible to stop smoking because lots of people have stopped. Stop wasting your money and start giving Sadaqah generously.

I hope that this has benefitted you and if ever I have used foul languages or done any mistakes, please forgive me!

It’s now high time to ask Allah forgiveness for all our sins, whether big or small, as the Day of Judgment is very near and Insha Allah we will pass all the tests on this Day and our rewards will be Jannat.
