World of Jinns
Dr Qayum Hamid Changal
The word Jinn always captivates our thought process followed by end number of questions. The problem is all these movies and other horror shows on television have tampered our minds badly about their appearance. Then, we have other section of media and academics that forces us to believe that Jinns don’t exist. And, many of us are caught in between the two, all imaginary and slapdash. Another perception breathes in our society that educated class shouldn’t believe in their existence, especially those who peruse science. In nutshell, most of us are caught in the ignorance and disinformation about the Jinns.
Being Muslim, I believe in their existence and there is no second thought about it. The literal meaning of Jinn is hidden from sight, or concealed. The word is of an Arabic origin, thus it makes us understand that they are hidden from us.
It’s mentioned in Qur’an, “Verily he [Shaytaan] and his qabeeluhu [his soldiers from the jinn or his tribe] see you from where you cannot see them…” [Al-A’raaf 7:27]. But, they may appear before us in different forms, animals as well as people. It could be any animal, a snake, dog, cat, etc. Thus, there’s every possibility that we may see them and yet unaware. It’s a very tricky situation, thus they may deceive us anytime in any form or state.
Another question is, what are they made up of? It’s mentioned in Qur’an and Sunnah that they are made up of fire. Allah says in Qur’an, “And the jinns did He create from a smokeless flame of fire.” [Al-Rahmaan 55:15]. It’s compulsory to mention here that Shaitan is also a Jinn and is made up of fire. But, the interesting question here arises that if Shaitan is made up of fire, how it will be tormented in the hell fire? A simple answer is, aren’t we humans made up of dust? But that doesn’t mean that we are still in the form of dust. We have flesh, bones, blood, sensation and soul. In a similar manner Allah created Jinn and Shaitan from fire, but they are not the fire now.
There are the good or pious Jinns, and then there are the bad ones. Allah, just like us humans, has gifted them the reasoning, the process of understanding and choosing between right or wrong. They do commit sins of different degrees and forms too like us. Allah created them to worship Allah Alone, with no partner or associate.
It’s mentioned in Qur’an, “And I (Allaah) created not the jinns and humans, except they should worship Me (Alone).” [Al-Dhaariyaat 51:56]. Though they have their distinct nature and features, Allah created them for the same reason He created us.
There are various types of Jinns. Some are like flying winds and wings, some can dwell in the form of animals, and the third form can travel and rest. There’s a Sahi Hadith regarding it. Abu Tha’labah al-Khushani said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘The jinn are of three types: a types that has wings, and they fly through the air; a type that looks like snakes and dogs; and a type that stops for a rest then resumes its journey.”
Their powers too are far different than others. Allah has bestowed them with the unique powers or qualities, like they can travel or fly much faster. Another unique power that Allah has provided them is they can even enter the human body. It’s mentioned in Qur’an and Hadith, thus there’s no dispute regarding it. In Qur’an it’s mentioned, “Those who eat riba (interest) will not stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except like the standing of a person beaten by Shaytan leading him to insanity. That is because they say: ‘Trading is only like Riba’…” [2:275]. Ibn Taymiyah said, “The fact that jinn can enter human bodies is proven by the consensus of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaah.”
The person who is occupied by the Jinn shall have different features and actions. First, he may suffer from epileptic seizures, speak in a language that’s alien to oneself (means one may not understand it), the carpet on what he’s sitting may be pulled away, the other things in the room (utensils, furniture, hanging lamps, etc) starts shaking as at the time of earthquake, etc. Those who deny it are denying Qur’an and Sunnah, thus committing the grave sin. Undoubtedly, it shall be regarded as the profanity and disrespect towards our religion Islam.
Jinns do eat and drink like the humans, even steal the food from us humans. After listening to various individuals and their personal experiences, Jinns even steal or scatter our possessions, may get obsessed with certain individual, place or thing.
If one recites Qur’an in loud voice they may come around to listen to it. As said earlier, there are the pious ones who pray like us and are very obedient to Qur’an and Sunnah. And, the disobedient ones are against Qur’an and Sunnah, anti-Islam and they try to harm the humans. Thus, some Jinns are Muslims and some are ‘Kafirs’. It’s mentioned in Surah Jinn (72:11), ” [Some jinn said:] ‘There are among us some that are righteous, and some the contrary; we are groups, each having a different way (religious sects, etc.)”.
The million dollar question arises that where do these Jinns live? We have religious proof that explains that they usually live in the ruins, dirty places like toilets and bathrooms, garbage dumps, etc. That’s why Prophet Muhammed (S.A.W) used to recite the special Dua before entering the toilet. It is, “Allaahumma innee a’oodhu bika min al-khubuthi wa’l-khabaa’ith (O Allaah, I seek refuge with You from the evil ones, male and female),” reported by al-Bukhaari, 142; and Muslim, 375.
There is a lot to write and discuss about Jinns. But, most importantly is that we have to believe in their existence.
I am a doctor and my profession may suggest me strictly not to believe in them. But, my religion is above any profession, place or emotion, thus I have to believe in it. And, it’s not a blind faith at all. We have all the proofs mentioned in Qur’an and Hadith, it should be enough for us to accept their presence and at the same time respect their existence. May Allah guide us to the righteous path and bless us with the power of thinking to learn and follow Islam.
